Committee Meeting 20/04/17

Another great meeting last night. We heard about the recent trip from our Royal Mencap regional Campaigns Officer, Mike Le-Surf (great name, right). We were delighted he had a busy day and was able to see a lot of what we do first hand. Stephen, our fantastically committed Chair, prepared a fun packed agenda that started with a visit to the Hollicombe Centre, followed by a trip to Torbay Hospital to see the newly installed Changing Place (awesome news). Next they had a chat with hospital staff about how to make best use of the Hospital Passport Scheme. Finally they finished off in style judging an Easter Hat competition at Gateway (jealous I wasn’t there). Apparently Martin’s hat was particularly good.

During the meeting we had an update from the amazingly resourceful Jenny about developments within Coordin8; the summer programme certainly looks exciting. Mark, who brings so much joy to so many from the Torbay Phab club, sent us a report telling us what Junior Phab have been up to, including ‘Steven’s Quiz’ and a bowling night at Torbay Leisure Hotels. Reminds me how proud we are to have supported such worthwhile projects.

Finally, as a relatively recent addition to the team, I wanted to share an insight with you about some of the inspirational work that goes on both within and alongside Torbay Mencap. Remember that everyone here is a volunteer. For example, it’s truly humbling to hear about the commitment of Janet, Mo, Lou, Rita, Carole and Barry who give so much time and energy to Gateway; without whom it would not be possible. We hear first hand from our legendary Minute Secretary, Danny, about how valued Gateway activities are and I am looking forward to telling you lots more about what goes on, via our new website in the near future. Then there’s the support of  Preston Rotary Club, who have, for many years, been providing transport for the Gateway Club, volunteering to drive attendees to and from the club on Tuesday nights. So many wonderful people providing so much happiness within our community. Long may it continue!
