A person with a learning disability has impaired intellectual ability. They may experience difficulty with everyday activities such as household tasks, socialising or managing money. A learning disability affects someone for their whole life.

Learning disabilities range from ‘mild’ to ‘profound’ ‘complex’ and ‘multiple’. Just like anyone else, people with learning disabilities may have other conditions – physical and/or sensory impairment, autism and/or mental health problems.

Torbay Mencap is a registered charity (Charity no. 1103726) and have been active in our community for nearly 70 years. This year alone we have allocated over £50,000 to sustainable projects helping local people with learning difficulties and disabilities.

As a committee we meet monthly, generally on the 3rd Thursday of every month, between 7 – 9pm in Jasmyn House, 1 Midvale Road, Paignton TQ4 5BD.

We are seeking active new members to join us and anyone is able to come along and sit in on one of our meetings to see what we do first hand, before making any commitment. If you are interested, contact us using the details provided.

We were delighted that Janet, our long serving (soon to retire) and dedicated Committee Secretary was recognised by The Royal Mencap Society – shortlisted for Activist of the Year – for her outstanding contribution to our community in 2018. You can read about it here
